Traditionally, electric network planning and rollouts have been based on statistical estimations resulting in some cases on over-sized capacity grids. However, today DSO’s challenges- growing electricity demand, integration of intermittent renewables energy resources and increased assets and efficiency – entails the need of better control of the LV network, precise and real-time. In this context knowing how customers where customers are connected – network topology, feeder and phase level with 100% accuracy – is crucial to build a reliable inventory. Without this level of reliability, any further data processing to calculate relevant network parameters – technical loss, power flow, detect congestion points, etc.- will include errors that impact on an efficient network management and planning.

Mapping Algorithm: automatic LV network topology identification algorithm

ARIADNA Grid has an effective algorithm that automatically finds an existing LV network topology map, with 100% reliability.

Crossing data from smart meter registers with each Secondary Substation feeder supervision monitoring, and in a timeframe of a few days calculates to which feeder and phase is a smart meter electrically connected to. It can determine the connection of any smart meter, regardless of the rest of meters of the area being monitored or even being digital counters.
The algorithm guarantees that the association between customers and their feeder-phase connection is automatically updated, regardless of any topology change that happens on the network. Additionally, this method is independent of the communication model of smart metering technologies (PLC, radio, cellular,…). Thanks to this patent technology, many DSOs have improved and completed significantly the accuracy of their digital asset inventory.
