One of the main challenges in low-voltage networks is knowing exactly where each customer is connected within the network. Having a reliable, up-to-date topology also helps utilities manage new demand more effectively, such as those arising from EVs, renewables and future capacity needs.
The transformation of electricity distribution networks is now a reality. Traditionally, static and based on infrastructure such as copper cables and transformers. Over the last decade, in response to the need for greater control, these networks have incorporated electronic measuring components capable of collecting vast amounts of data.
At Ariadna, we specialize in capturing and processing this data using artificial intelligence and advanced analytics tools. This enables us not only to analyze the current state of the grid, but also to anticipate the impact of new technologies—such as electric vehicles and renewable energies. In doing so, we are able to help design and better prepare the grid for the future, forecasting its medium-term needs.
Our beginnings as an electronics company led us to develop a solution to address a major challenge for distribution utilities: understanding how their networks are actually connected. While utility companies typically know which customers and meters are linked to each transformer, they often lack visibility into the network’s topology. Traditionally, portable devices have been used to determine these structures. At Ariadna, we have designed, manufactured, and sold these devices (feeder and phase identifiers) globally, using 100% proprietary technology.

The emergence of smart grids introduced a new challenge: how to reduce the cost and time involved in field campaigns used to determine network topology. Moreover, over time, the network’s layout evolves, requiring repeated verification checks and updates.
The solution to this came with the deployment of smart meters. At Ariadna, we realized that by leveraging the data from these smart meters and sensors installed in substations—and combining them with our proprietary algorithm—we could automatically determine the network topology.

The reliability of our solution was demonstrated in a pilot project involving over 2,000 smart meters, where we achieved 100% accuracy. This globally innovative technology was patented by our company, Ariadna.
Over the years, we have developed a Smart IoT Platform (global LV management and use cases) using various technological tools, including artificial intelligence. Having a fully reliable and up-to-date network topology has enabled us to continue developing solutions that address multiple use cases with high value for DSO, while maintaining the highest standards of reliability.

The challenge now for the future is for utility companies to be able to better manage all of the energy flowing through their cables—reinforcing the network where necessary, but still optimizing investments. This will not only benefit electricity providers, but also society as a whole.
